The most decorated player in the 11 years of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey is returning to the program as an assistant coach.
Maria Rooth, a four-time Olympian from Stockholm, Sweden, was hired Thursday to replace Michelle McAteer on coach Shannon Miller’s staff. McAteer was hired last month as women’s coach at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
“Maria is arguably the best player to come through our program. That’s why her number (27) has been retired,” Miller said Wednesday. “She helped us win three NCAA championships and she’s been in four Olympics, and she wanted to move on from playing and become a coach.”
