Jessica Koizumi(2 goals tonight) scored on a dump in from the blue line 29 seconds into the game.. five-hole on Emily Brookshaw and the route was on.. or so we all thought. UMD finished the first period up 5-0 and it didn't seem like they could do anything wrong. Brookshaw looked really shaky in the first period, not just on the dump in that went under her. UMD outshot BSU 25-5 for the period 'enroute' to the 5-0 lead. While the game ended 6-2 I wouldn't call it a route because BSU turned their play up after the first.
From the start of the 2nd period, BSU pretty much controlled the game in my eyes. They only outscored UMD 2-1 for the rest of the game, and were still out shot 13-19, but behind Brookshaw's MUCH improved play they had UMD on their heels more than UMD had them on theirs.
Karine Demeule scored her first two goals of the season tonight, the second the most important as it ended BSU's run in the second period. It was also a *BLAST* from the face-off dot on a rebound.
The freshmen tonight.....*LOOKED* like freshmen. The passing wasn't nearly as crisp as last weekend against North Dakota. I am sure that *LAST SEASON* this would have turned into a nightmare and probably ended up 5-4 or maybe even a tie 5-5 rather than a 6-2 UMD win.
I think that right now, it's a good 'reality' check for the Freshmen, and much better to happen on a Friday night against BSU instead of a Saturday before a road trip. They'll be able to get everything on the right track before heading to St. Cloud (who beat OSU 5-4 tonight.)
Amie Meyer took over for Riitta Schaublin and faced 3 shots in 10:53 of play.
