UMD Beats Wisconsin 3-1, UMDBulldogs.com story

I couldn't watch today's game online, but the UMDBulldogs.com story follows:

NO. 3 BULLDOGS STAY ON TOP OF WCHA WITH 3-1 WIN OVER WISCONSIN
Last Updated: Friday, November 30, 2007 5:38 PM

Despite being out shot 32-to-22 and serving twice as many minutes in the penalty box (16 minutes compared to eight), the No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team was up to the task of preserving its Western Collegiate Hockey Association lead Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs defeated the University of Wisconsin 3-1 in Madison, Wisc., running their overall tab to 11-3-1, and 10-3-0 in WCHA play.

UMD got on the board first at 13:26 of the opening stanza when freshman Laura Fridfinnson's backhanded a shot from the left circle to beat Badger goaltender Jessie Vetter. The goal, which was assisted by Tawni Mattila, was Fridfinnson's fifth on the year and sent the Maroon and Gold into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would stretch that advantage just 49 seconds in the second period when freshman forward Iya Gavrilova would tuck home a rebound off an Elin Holmlov shot from the right circle, courtesy of a pass from Myriam Trepanier on the point. Gavrilova's fifth goal of the season was also UMD's 17 tally with a man-advantage, and it proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Wisconsin would pull within one when Tia Hansen overtook a puck outside the center circle and cleanly netted the Badgers one and only goal of the contest 14:06 into the second period. But the Bulldogs would gut-check, and just two minutes and 32 seconds later, Emmanuelle Blais would carry a Tara Gray pass over the Wisconsin blueline and find freshman Haley Irwin to finish the Badgers off. The goal was Irwin's fourth in just two games and eighth overall this year.

UMD's penalty-kill unit was yet again unbeatable for 60 minutes, stifling seven Wisconsin power-plays. Goaltender Kim Martin turned away 31 shots, including 16 in the scoreless third period alone, to cash in her eighth win of the season.

The Bulldogs and Badgers (10-5-2, 6-2-2) resume their bitter rivalry tomorrow afternoon in the Kohl Center at 2:07 p.m.
